Indie acoustic-folk artist Alex Sloane answered some questions for WHERE MY GIRLS AT? Hailing from Los Angeles, CA Alex will be performing in West Hollywood, CA at the Whisky a Go Go on October 3rd @ 7pm.
When and how did you first become interested in music? How long have you been playing music?
"I've always loved music! But I really got into it when I was 10 years old, around the time Avril Lavigne came out. I was absolutely obsessed with her and loved her music, so my dad taught me how to play guitar. He handed his old guitar down to me, and we restrung it Jimi Hendrix style because I'm left handed. My friends learned how to play instruments too, so five of us started an all-female rock band! It was hilariously adorable. Then, when I was 16, I started playing acoustically. I released my first EP and had a brief stint as a street performer on Third Street Promenade. And now, at 18, I've played everywhere from Amplyfi to the House of Blues Sunset Strip."
What/Who are your musical influences?
"I really like Laura Marling and Lana Del Rey. I love Fefe Dobson too; my band and I do a mean cover of "Take Me Away"! And this may come as a surprise because of my relatively mellow sound, but I'm really into Nirvana. Once, I was auditioning for a musical, and I came in with my guitar and sang "Smells Like Teen Spirit". I definitely received some weird looks."
Tell me about what it's like for you being a woman artist in the music industry.
"The most difficult part about being an artist in general, especially an artist starting out like myself, is finding a base of support for your work, and I think being female has magnified that. The music industry is incredibly competitive, and women are so reluctant to help other women. However, I'm super lucky to have met lots of remarkable people who have helped me along the way."
What words of advice would you provide aspiring young girl musicians?
"The most important thing you must remember is to never lose sight of your creative vision. Be sure you're making the art that you love because that's the only way you'll truly feel successful."
