A few weeks back up-and-coming British vocalist Rosie Lowe released her debut single "Me & Your Ghost." You might have heard her vocals on Lil Silva's track "No Doubt". "Right Thing" is her newest single from her debut EP Right Thing out this December. You've been compared to Jessie Ware and BANKS with your sultry R&B sounds, what do you make of this? "Being a young woman in music there’s always going to be comparisons. But I never take that as a negative because I think it’s important for us ladies to support each other. I think we’re all doing something different within our realms. Whether that be stylistically, vocally or sound wise. People always need comparisons as it gives them a platform to relate to other artists. But I think those women are fantastic and I have so much respect for them." -Idol Magazine. Hailing from Brighton, indie-electronic duo, IYES (Josh Christopher & Melis Soyaslanova), released two impressive tracks back in March 2013- "Glow" and "Lighthouse." "'Til Infinity" is their newest single, after being signed to Duly Noted Records. “We were up late one night, something bad like Big Brother was on the TV and we were eating this amazing take-out soup,” recalls Melis. “Suddenly, Josh starts drumming on the sofa. That was the beginning of 'Til Infinity. Once we had the rhythm, the rest of the song seemed to fall in to place. It’s probably our favourite song we’ve ever written, but it wasn’t one we planned. But in case it was the prawn soup that inspired, Josh is learning to make it himself.” -Press Party. Vancouver's Hannah Epperson creates orchestral folk indie-pop with her violin, loop pedal, and voice (think Andrew Bird and and Owen Pallett). With just a 5 track home-recorded, self-released EP to her name, Hannah is about to release a 2 track EP titled, BURN featuring production by STINT’s dark electronic signature. She was named one of the top three artists by the PEAK Performance Project (a project designed to educate, promote, develop and hopefully launch the careers of some of British Columbia’s top emerging artists). For being awarded one of the top spots, she will perform at the PEAK Performance Project's finale show on November 21 at the Commodore Ballroom. "Shadowless" is the newest single from her upcoming BURN EP, take a listen below. London-based singer/producer Lyla Foy, formerly known as WALL, recently premiered her first track "Easy" under Lyla Foy (her birth name). She was the first signing to BCS, the label of Black Cab Sessions and is currently signed to SubPop Records. Her debut album is set to be released in 2014- take a listen to "Easy" below. Who influences and inspires you? "I really like Patti Smith and I really respect people like St Vincent who are heavily involved in the production and write using their own technology on their laptop, start with the production of the song and build things from there. And chicks who play guitar and play all their own things. ‘Cos I played all the instruments on the recordings, I produced it all myself. For me, the songwriting comes from the production of the songs rather than just sitting there – I never write sitting with a guitar. It doesn’t come from that. It comes from a beat or a tempo or just a bassline, that’s kind of how I’ve started writing a song, a different approach to perhaps how people would normally write songs." -Wonderland Magazine. Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside is an American rock band from Portland, Oregon. The group is composed of Sallie Ford (vocals and guitar), Tyler Tornfelt (upright bass), Ford Tennis (drums), and Jeff Munger (guitar). In 2009, they self-released an EP titled, Not An Animal and later signed a record deal with Partisan Records and released their first full-length album Dirty Radio in May 2011. Earlier this year, they released the album, Untamed Beast via Fargo Records- "They Told Me" is the lead single from the album. Check out their live set with KEXP at the 2013 Bumbershoot Festival below. Who were the artists that made you want to pursue music? "When I decided I wanted to start writing my own music I was listening to a lot of jazz and also contemporary indie rock stuff; Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald, and Squirrel Nut Zippers, who do a lot of classic jazz modernized. I just loved that feminine tone of voice. I also listened to a lot of Cat Power, CocoRosie, Regina Spektor and just thought, yeah, why not do something that’s a mix of them both." -The Independent. Lotte Kestner is the solo project of Anna-Lynne Williams of Trespassers William. China Mountain (named after a mountain range in southern Oregon) was recorded over a year in her bedroom in Seattle. Her second album, Stolen, is a collection of cover songs. Her third release, The Bluebird of Happiness, came out on Saint Marie Records in 2013. And lastly, Saint-Loup Records has just released a fourth album, Until. Anna-Lynne also makes music with Robert Gomez in the band Ormonde, and has written several books of poetry, most recently the book In the Night I Go Sailing. "Wrestler" is from The Bluebird of Happiness. I am sure you get asked this a lot, but can you tell us what inspired the name Lotte Kestner? "A few years after I’d already read “The Sorrows of Young Werther”, I came across the name Lotte Kestner again. She was the woman who inspired that novel. I loved the sound of her name, and I borrowed it. She’s a symbol of unrequited love." -The Big Takeover. 19 year-old British singer-songwriter, Ella Eyre has already been featured on tracks with Rudimental- "Waiting All Night" and Naughty Boy and Wiz Khalifa- "Think About It." She recently released her debut single, "Deeper" which is the lead track from her upcoming debut EP, Deeper out December 22. Fronted by singer-songwriter Jen Hirsh, LA-based MONOGEM is an electro-pop soul collaboration with producer-songwriter, Scott Smith (the two of them met as undergrads at Berklee College of Music), Peter Dyer (synth and keys), Thomas Drayton (bass), and Nate Lotz (drums). "All We Have" is the second track from MONOGEM's debut EP, The Glow. "After living in Boston together and both moving back to Los Angeles, we asked ourselves, why haven't we written music together? Our songs started to sound very cohesive, which is such an exciting feeling. I was ready for my next artistic move and definitely knew I wanted to create a vibe, a sound, a feeling, something deeper than just starting a band." -Elle. Liverpool based singer-songwriter Mononoke's single "Alice" is a beautiful ballad and her video for "Alice" uses footage from the 1903 black and white Alice in Wonderland. "Alice" takes the story of Alice and Wonderland and masterfully creates a metaphor for lost love and a lost future. With little information out there in the internet world about Mononoke I wonder what she is up to next?. |
