Angel Olsen is set to release her sophomore LP, Burn Your Fire For No Witness on February 18th via Jagjaguwar. Angel Olsen channels my favorite kind of folk music- stripped, personal, and transcendent (think Warpaint, Daughter, and Sharon Van Etten). Her most recent EP, Sleepwalker included one of my favorite tracks of 2013, "Sweet Dreams." "White Fire" is another hauntingly beautiful track from her upcoming album which you can experience live once she kicks of her Winter/Spring American Tour. Starting in March, she will be on the West Coast in San Diego and traveling north to LA, SF, Portland, and Seattle. Angel recently performed a Tiny Desk Concert for NPR- check it out here and take a listen to "White Fire" below.
Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter, Emily King released her debut album, East Side Story in 2007. The critically acclaimed album was nominated for Best Contemporary R&B Album. Her follow-up EP, Seven was self-recorded and self-released in 2011. Emily has toured with the likes of Maroon 5, John Legend, and Emeli Sande, to name a few. Emily's newest single "Distance" celebrates her indie, soul, and R&B influences and passionate vocals. Take a listen to "Distance" below. What artists inspire you the most? "I always go back to the same three artists: Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix and The Beatles. I’m huge on songwriting and they really have inspired me. They could really touch your heart with three words and a melody." -AFRO. Hailing from Toronto, Canada, upcoming artist Sharon Nutzati beautifully blends acoustic folk, soul, and pop into her newest single, "People." In 2013, the 20 year old singer-songwriter released an EP, Stuck In Your Dreams and toured across Ontario. Beautiful Things, her debut album, is set to be released on May 6th, 2014. Follow Sharon on Facebook, Twitter, and SoundCloud for updates. Ellie Goulding and Angel Haze have teamed up to cover James Blake's "Life Round Here." I'm assuming they are channeling the rendition featuring Chance the Rapper. Ellie Goulding needs little introduction these days- the English singer-songwriter has released two full albums, Lights (2010) and Halycon Days (2012) to critical acclaim. She is currently signed to Polydor in the UK and Cherrytree Records in the US. Angel Haze is a newcomer to the hip hop scene signed to Island Records and Republic Records. The Detroit-born, Brooklynite released her debut album, Dirty Gold this past December. When asked her goal as a musician, she replies, “I want to make people feel connected. I want to tell a story – everybody’s story." Listen to these talented ladies cover "Life Round Here" below. Her name is BANKS. The Los Angeles native and self-taught pianist, vocalist, and songwriter has released a new track with production by Shlohmo. "Brain" is similar to her previous tracks, blending darkness and sensuality with her strong vocals and always spot on production. Take a listen to "Brain" below via Harvest Records (United States) and Good Years (UK). "I think it's just years of writing music—I've definitely developed. And also going through different experiences you just mature as a woman. Life has made me realize what I want it to be. I definitely want [my music] to be really cinematic; I want you to be able to visualize things while you're listening to it. I just want everything to be moody—I want it to affect people." -Interview Magazine. "Wild winters, warm coffee, mom's gone, do you love me? Blazin' summers, cold coffee, baby's gone ,do you love me?" Based in Durham, North Carolina Sylvan Esso is a collaboration between vocalist Amelia Meath (Mountain Man) and electronic musician Nick Sanborn (Megafaun). The duo previously released their debut single "Hey Mami" via Trekky Records. Recently, the twosome put out "Coffee." I can't get enough of the catchy synth production coupled with Amelia's vocals- you can check out their other track "Play It Right" to hear what I am talking about. They're heading out on tour starting in DC today- here are the dates... 1/28 Washington DC - DC9 1/30 Brooklyn, NY - Rough Trade NYC 2/10 San Diego - Soda Bar 2/11 Los Angeles, CA - Satellite 2/13 San Francisco, CA - Bottom of the Hill 2/14 Portland, OR - Bunk Bar 2/15 Seattle, WA - Barboza 3/11 - 3/16 Austin, TX SXSW I know where my partner and I are going on Valentine's day. How did you guys get together? "We met in Milwaukee at the Cactus Club about three years ago when Nick’s solo project, Made of Oak, was thrown onto a bill that we were playing on. I knew we were friends immediately because of the way he danced while he was playing. When Mountain Man needed a remix, I sent him the stems for a song called “Play It Right,” which is now a Sylvan Esso song that’s going to be released on our upcoming single." -Indy Week. Rubee Rayne's newest track "Breathe" is top notch. The UK singer's relaxing and soulful vocals flow beautifully with the catchy production from El Train. My assumptions based on her appearance were flipped on their head once her voice came onto the track... I was expecting something "hard" and was blown away by the soft and sexy essence of "Breathe." Once again, I found myself checking my biases about race and women in music. Take a listen to "Breathe" below and follow her Facebook and Twitter for updates. Can't wait to hear more from this talented artist. “While you judge me by my outward appearance I am silently doing the same to you, even though there's a ninety-percent chance that in both cases our assumptions are wrong.” -Richelle E. Goodrich. Philadelphia's new electronic duo Marian Hill is composed of Jeremy Lloyd (production and writing) and Samantha Gongol (vocals and writing). Combining influences ranging from Ella Fitzgerald to Drake, the duo blend a mesmerizing electro/R&B sound with blues and jazz influences. Their newest single "One Time” will be featured on the twosome's debut EP, Play which will be out on March 4. Play will also include their sultry previous releases "Lovit" and "Whisky." If you’re in the Philly area, Marian Hill will be playing their first show at Boot & Saddle on February 25. Alt-country singer, songwriter, and guitarist Larissa Tandy has recently stepped into the solo spotlight. Her previous work has been showcased in her band Strine Singers as well as with iamloveproof.
