Her name is BANKS. The Los Angeles native and self-taught pianist, vocalist, and songwriter will release her EP, London tomorrow, September 10th. She is currently on tour supporting the Weeknd (alongside electronic dance artist Anna Lunoe- who received a shout-out yesterday). Listen to her latest single "This Is What It Feels Like."
Brooklyn's electronic dream pop trio, Au Revoir Simone (Erika Forster- vocals/keyboard, Annie Hart- vocals/keyboard, and Heather D'Angelo- vocals/drum machine/keyboard) is set to release their new album, Move in Spectrums, September 24. "Somebody Who" was the first released single from the album, followed by "Crazy." Interestingly, their name comes from a line Pee-wee Herman says to a character (named Simone) in Tim Burton's 1985 film, Pee-wee's Big Adventure. Hailing from Brighton/LDN, Yumi and the Weather (aka Ruby Taylor) unveiled her new single, "All We Can" from her upcoming EP, All We Can (out October 21st). She self-produced her first track, "Not Again" which she released in the fall of 2012. Her next single, "Must I Wait" dropped in early 2013. These three tracks will make up the EP via XVI Records- in addition to some remixes of the songs. Listen to "All We Can" below. Australian-born singer/producer, Anna Lunoe is currently on a North-American tour with The Weeknd. In the past, she has collaborated with Flume, Touch Sensitive, and AC Slater. Her sound can be described as follows: "By lending her distinct and delicate vocals to tracks and blending her fruity house, garage, indie pop, and bass influences, she adds an edge, understanding and feminity to club music. The tempos of the songs may very but the sound stays signature." Check out her newest solo production, "Breathe" below. Monica Martin is the front-woman of PHOX- a 7-piece folk-pop group from Baraboo, Wisconsin. Her musical inspirations stem from classic jazz and female singers like Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Brandi Carlile, Fiona Apple and Mountain Man. PHOX planned on attending Lollapalooza 2013 to check out some bands... but when Azealia Banks cancelled, PHOX was called upon to fill the opening. Check out their song, "Slow Motion" from their album, Confetti. Potty Mouth was formed by four ladies (Abby Weems, Ally Einbinder, Phoebe Harris and Victoria Mandanas) from Western Massachusetts in 2011. In September 2011, they released their demo, Bad Bad followed by their EP Sun Damage in 2012. Their new album, Hell Bent is set to be released on September 17, 2013 and you can stream it here (http://www.npr.org/2013/09/01/216461958/first-listen-potty-mouth-hell-bent?sc=fb&cc=fmp&refresh=true). Inspired by Beat Happening, Green Day, 70's punk, and early 90's indie rock Potty Mouth is a punk band on the rise. Listen to the track, "The Spins" below and check out their Q&A by BUST Magazine on ageism and sexism in the Punk scene. LA-native TOKiMONSTA (Jennifer Lee- music producer/recording artist/DJ extraordinaire) released her new LP, Half Shadows on Ultra Records in April 2013. "Go With It" featuring MNDR (an American electronic music duo composed of Amanda Warner and Pete Wade) is one of the collaborations on Half Shadows. Her first album, Midnight Menu and her EP, Creature Dreams were released on Brainfeeder- she was the first female to join Flying Lotus' crew/label. As a way to support women music producers, Gender Amplified (http://genderamplified.com/) is putting on a "free, day-long event on the Barnard College campus in New York City to discuss the state of women in music production, how to get involved in the technical side of the music industry, and the relationship between music production and commerce. The festival will feature live performances by artists including THEESatisfaction, Alluxe aka Laura Escudé (Electronic Creatives), and Genesis Be, industry panels, and instructional workshops geared to high school youth to encourage them to pursue studies in music production and technology." The Gender Amplified Music Festival will be on September 28, 2013- check out their website for more information. A woman with a banjo- Elle King's Deer Tick-esque and sultry voice, country-rock-soul-blues sound, and charismatic personality are enticing. In an interview with Teen Vogue she stated, "I flip the turntables. I write a lot from the male perspective, but as a female. That's how I live my life. I can roll with the boys." Listen to "Good To Be A Man" below and her Khia cover of "My Neck, My Back". Warning- "My Neck, My Back" contains explicit lyrics (and I kinda love it). The new single "Never Expire" by Australian singer/songwriter, Gossling (Helen Croome) was released on August 25, 2013 as a teaser for her new album, Harvest of Gold- out November 2013. Something about Australian accents and subtle synth beats gets me every time. Hailing from Belgium, Selah Sue has a sound all her own- with a mixture of soul-funk, reggae, electronic rock, and incredible vocals. She is in high demand- Cee-Lo Green agreed to sing with her on a duet and ended up asking her to put the track "Please" on his own album and Prince offered her a spot to accompany him in a show in Belgium. Her debut album, Selah Sue was released in the U.S. in August 2012 and she just recently completed her U.S. tour. Check out "This World" live below. |
